The relationship between Mary and Clarissa.
Overview[]
Mary and Clarissa had a very one-sided relationship of protectiveness and fealty on Clarissa's part. It is unknown as to why Clarissa felt so protective of Mary and wanted to guide her at French Court, but the fact is that Clarissa helped Mary swerve countless dangers and aided in Mary's discovery of her enemies at Court.
Mary eventually reciprocated Clarissa's kindness, eager to integrate her into society and give her a chance at a new life. However, when Clarissa kidnapped the young princes, Charles and Henri, Mary sided with Catherine and sabotaged Clarissa.
In the Series[]
Season One[]
Clarissa dotes on the young queen for the majority of the first season. In the Pilot, Clarissa warns Mary not to drink the poisoned wine. She also helps Mary mark a path to the stables to escape the castle when they are being held hostage in Left Behind. In addition to that, Clarissa saves the young queen from drowning after Catherine throws poison into the bath.
As the season progresses, they form a complicated but caring relationship. Although never having met or officially conversed with each other, the two become allies, and Mary is set on integrating Clarissa into society. However, the two have a falling out when Clarissa kidnaps Charles and Henri in Royal Blood. In order to stop Clarissa from hurting Charles, Mary hits her in the head with a rock, which causes Clarissa to lose consciousness. She is then presumed dead by all, but no one is too concerned to give her a proper burial, not even Mary.
