Leith first appears in Betrothed when he is called upon by Claude to her room. She asks Leith where her zibellino is - Italian for sable - and when she remembers that she may have left in the Versailles carriage, she instructs him to go get it for her. Unfortunately for Claude, that carriage is currently on its way to Paris, and Leith is not inclined to go find it for her. As Claude threatens to tell her mother, Leith mockingly reminds her that Catherine is currently locked up, so she "can't run to Mommy and complain". Later, Leith accidentally overhears a private conversation between Charles and Claude, in which they mention that Francis is dying. Taking pity on Claude, Leith tries to find her zibellino after all - but to no avail. He visits her at night to break the news, as well as keep her company until she falls asleep. While waiting for King Antoine's carriage in Extreme Measures, Claude gives Leith another extravagant gift. The pair have been spending quite a lot of time together lately and they schedule another date that evening. As Antoine rolls up, the princess greets him while his valley shouts at Leith for not unloading the king's luggage already. Claude and Leith share a sad look as they both know that Leith has outgrown that station, but continues to be confused for it. The same evening, Claude goes to Leith to boast about her role in saving Constance's life, only to find him in bed with her lady-in-waiting. She walks away in confusion, and when Leith runs after, he explains that instead of falling for someone higher in station, such as Claude, he went for someone he is up to par with. In a way, Leith alludes to having feelings for Claude, a sentiment that Claude appreciates. In Fight or Flight, Claude calls for Leith to arrange a carriage to take her into the village, but her real reason for having him there is so she can suggest a relationship between him and a girl just above his station. She has feelings for him but wants to see him married better than he was born. The first phase of Claude's plan to prepare Leith for meeting his fiancée includes teaching Leith the ways of the highborn, which includes dancing and dining. Instead, he ends up teaching her dances from the village. As Claude tries to continue her plan throughout the course of the day, Leith confronts her, revealing that there is no Juliet. Claude admits that she just wanted to spend time with him because she wishes they could be together. Following this confession, they kiss. |
