A timeline of events in the life of Francis II

France[]

  • April 1543 After a long and quite unpleasant struggle, Princess Catherine, Duchess of Orleans receives the news she had long been praying for when she learns that she is finally pregnant at the age of 23.
  • January 19, 1544 11 years and 3 months after their wedding, Prince Henry and Princess Catherine welcome their first child when Francis, Dauphin of France is born at the Chateau de Fontainebleau.
  • February 10, 1544 Francis is baptized at the Chapelle des Trinitaires in Fontainebleau.
  • March 25, 1547 At the age of 28 Prince Henry is crowned King Henry II of France at Reims Cathedral
  • June 10, 1549 At the age of 30 Princess Catherine is crowned Queen Consort of France at the Basilica of St. Denis
  • January 27, 1548 The Châtillon agreement is signed which seals the betrothal of 4 year old Francis to 6 year old Mary, Queen of Scotland
  • April 24, 1558 The wedding of the Dauphin Francis age 14 and Mary, Queen of Scotland age 16 is celebrated at the Notre Dame Cathedral. Unfortunately no children would be born from this union.
  • June 10, 1559 Francis suddenly becomes King when his father dies from septicemia at the age of 40 after he is fatally injured in a jousting accident.
  • September 21, 1559 At the age of 15, Dauphin Francis is officially crowned King Francis II at the Reims Cathedral by his uncle Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine. His reign is dominated by much religious crisis.

Scotland[]

  • May 1559 Mary's mother Marie de Guise asks for help after she and her council are forced to leave and take refuge in Fort Dunbar, by the end of 1559 France is back in control of Scotland
  • January 1560 the English fleet blockaded the port of Leith, which French troops had turned into a military base. They were supported by the arrival in April of 6000 soldiers and 3000 horsemen, which began the siege of the city.
  • July 6, 1560 The treaty of Edinburgh is signed which ended French occupation of Scotland. Francis II and Mary Stuart had to withdraw French troops and stop displaying England's arms.

France[]

  • November 1560 Francis' health begins to deteriorate
  • November 16, 1560 Francis suffers a syncope
  • December 15, 1560 King Francis II dies from complications of an ear infection that was exacerbated by an abscess. He was just 16 years old and had been on the throne for only 17 months.
  • December 21, 1560 Just over a month after losing her beloved son Queen Catherine de' Medici is name Regent of France by the privy council. Also the Guises left the court, while Francis' widow Mary returned home to Scotland.
  • December 23, 1560 Francis is interred in the Basilica of St. Denis by the Prince of La Roche-sur-Yon. His parents & several siblings also rest here.
